How to size a generator
Size on starting load, not running load. Motors, compressors and pumps draw several times their rated current for a moment at start-up, and a set sized only for the running figure will trip. As a rough guide, allow three times the rated power of the largest motor on the circuit, then add the running load of everything else.
1500 rpm or 3000 rpm
A 1500 rpm set runs cooler, quieter and considerably longer between overhauls. A 3000 rpm set is cheaper and lighter for the same output. For continuous or standby duty, choose 1500 rpm. For occasional site use, 3000 rpm is usually the better value.
Noise limits
Equipment used outdoors in the EU carries a guaranteed sound power level under Directive 2000/14/EC. Urban sites and events frequently specify a limit, so check the figure before committing.
